The most prevalent basis for fair housing complaint in the state of California
today is disability (25%). This is up from 20% the year before. 12% of the
complainants claimed they were denied the opportunity to make a reasonable
accommodation or modification. What does this mean for you, as an owner or
manager of residential rental housing? It means that you must take disability
issues very seriously. Your policies and procedures should reflect a proactive
approach, making every effort to reasonably accommodate disabled applicants and
residents, thereby reducing your potential for fair housing complaints.
